Sailing with pets may become a necessity for a variety of reasons. For further reference, I recommend visiting Turbulent Waters, a UO sailing dedicated site.
While working on my magery, I summoned elementals so that I could work on animal lore as well. I found that if they stood in certain areas of the boat while it is moving, their health bars would not stay up. In my small boat, I found 3 spots where their health bars would stay up, as long as the boat faced the pictured direction. It did not seem to matter which direction I was sailing. Once my boat touched a server boundary, the health bars would drop immediately. Once my boat was completely off of the server boundary, I could keep the health bars up again.
