To adventure with a pet, you must first be able to control it skill wise. Once that check is in place, you must then have enough control slots available to control all the pets you wish to handle.
Each player is allowed 5 control slots total. Doesn't matter if they have 0 taming or 120.0. Each pet takes up a certain amount of control slots. Control slot information is listed in the taming chart on each individual pet's page. Once you have as many control slots used as you have available, you will not be able to tame any more creatures, claim more pets from the stables, summon any creatures, or accept any as a transfer. Mounts are counted when determining how many control slots are being used.
If you open up your status bar, it will inform you of exactly how many control slots (followers) you are using.
Creatures not listed in the pet database include ethereal mounts (1), summoned earth elemental (2), and summoned air elemental (2), summoned water elemental (3), golems (3), summoned fire elemental (4), hirelings (4), summoned daemons (5). All other summons (summon creature, blade spirit, energy vortex) take 1 slot.
