- 8x8
- To travel exactly 8 tiles from your previous skill gain for movement based skills in a north, south, east, or west direction in order to achieve another skill gain.
- Commonly done on a boat, but can be done on land.
- Learn more about 8x8.
A
- Aids or Bandies or Bandaids or Bandages
- Cloth that has been cut into strips for healing with either the healing or veterinary skill.
- AoS or Age of Shadows
- The fifth expansion to UO.
- Introduced the land mass of Malas, as well as necromancy, chivalry, customizable houses, and damage/resistance types.
- AR or Armor
- How much defence something has against physical attacks.
- Higher numbers mean better armor.
AI or Artificial Intelligence
An algorithm or program that controls how NPCs behave or react.
Some creatures have better AI, which makes them perform more intelligent actions.
B
- BA or Breath Attack
- The fire based breath ability that fire breathers use.

- Bonded or Bonding
- A special form of "tamed" status that allows a pet to be summoned and will cause the pet to turn into a ghost upon death that can be resurrected with veterinary.

C
- C-Bops or Crystal Ball of Pet Summoning
- An enchanted crystal ball acquired from Solen Queens that allow you to "summon" your bonded pet directly to your current location.

D
- DEX or Dexterity
- How dexterious something is.
- Effects how much stamina a player or NPC has, as well as how fast it can attack physically.
E
- EB or Ebolt or Energy Bolt
- A 6th circle spell that causes a small electrical bolt to fly towards a target.
F
- FB or Fireball
- A 3rd circle spell that causes a fireball to fly towards a target.
- FB or Fire Breath
- A non-resistable fireball that some creatures breathe.
- Looks exactly like the fire ball spell, but accompanied by a "roar".

- FS or Flame Strike
- A 7th circle spell that causes a tall pillar of fire to engulf the target.
G
- Gump
- An interface in the UO client for such things as skill listings, backpacks, paperdolls, health bars, etc.
- GGS or Guaranteed Gain System
- A skill gain system that ensures a point of skill gain if no skill gain has occurred within a certain amount of time.

- HP or Hit Points
- The total amount of damage one can take before death occurs.
I
- INT or Intelligence
- How intelligent one is.
- Determines how much mana one has available to cast spells with.
- Certain levels of intelligence are required to cast from a particular spell level.
J
- Jet Mare or Jet Black Mare
- A nightmare that uses the body style of the shaggy, dark brown horse with a blue-black hue applied to it, giving it a near solid black appearance.
- Also referred to as a

or Pure Black Mare

L
- LBR or Lord Blackthorn's Revenge
- The fourth expansion to UO.
- Provided a new 2D client that allowed access to the previously 3D only Ilshenar land mass.
- Lead Taming
- To "lead" or allow an aggressive creature to follow close enough to tame it, without punching the creature.

- LOS or Line of Sight
- The ability to see an object in a way to interact with it, such as by damaging it with spells, weaponry, or use skills on it.
M
- MA or Magic Arrow
- A 1st circle spell that causes a small flame like missile to fly towards the target.
- Mare or Nightmare
- A very strong, evil, fire breathing creature that looks like a black hued horse.
N
- Newbie
- Someone who is new at the game, or new to a particular experience.
- Is considered an insulting name when directed at a veteran player.
- NPC or Non Player Character
- Anything not played by a person.
- Can refer to vendors, town criers, bankers, monsters, animals, pets, etc.
O
- Orneriness
- How difficult a creature is to control.
- Ossies or Osties or Ostards
- A ridable creature that resembles an ostrich-lizard hybrid.
P
- Para Taming or Paralyzation Taming
- Using the paralyzation spell or paralyze field to tame an aggressive creature.
- Para taming causes a creature to lose 14% of all skills (not stats), instead of the normal 10%.
- Lead taming is the preferred method for taming aggressive creatures.
- Patch or Client Patch
- A "patch" applied to the UO client.
- Generally includes new artwork, language files, client improvements, and occasional bugs.
- PK or Player Kill
- To perform non-consensual killing of other players.
- Generally, weaker characters are the targets of player killing.
I got pk'd
means that a player killed another player.
- Pots or Potions
- Commonly found as loot on monsters or purchased from NPCs.
- Superior varieties of potions can only be created by player alchemists.
- Potions can only be used by drinking them, and cannot be applied to other players or NPCs
- PS or Power Scroll
- A special scroll that can only be acquired from champion spawns in Felucca.
- Allow players to increase their individual skill caps to 105, 110, 115, or 120.
- Smaller scrolls cannot be combined to equal larger ones (ie. If you have 4 +5 scrolls, it would not equal 1 +20 scroll. If you want 120 in a skill, you must use a +20 scroll).
- Publish
- A "patch" applied to the UO servers that includes game changes, bug fixes, and sometimes new bugs.
- Generally feared by the gaming population, since the servers tend to be somewhat unstable afterwards.

- Pure Mare or Pure Black Mare
- A nightmare that uses the body style of the shaggy, dark brown horse with a blue-black hue applied to it, giving it a near solid black appearance.

Jet Mare
or Jet Black Mare

- PvP or Player verses Player
- To do consensual battle against other players.
- This is usually done in the form of duels, guild wars, Order and Chaos, or Factions.
- PWW or Pure Wyrm or Pure White Wyrm
- A white wyrm that uses the body style of the red dragon with a white hue applied to it, giving it a near solid white appearance.
Q
R
- RA or Reactive Armor
- A 1st circle spell that reflects a certain percentage of physical attack back to the attacker.
- Can only be casted onto the caster.
- It is recommended that this spell not be active while attempting to tame aggressive creatures, since the reflected attacks will break the taming attempt.
- Regs or Reagents
- Spell components usually purchased from magic or alchemy shops.
S
- Skill Loss
- Loss of skill, not stats, that occurs upon resurrection or the very first time a creature is tamed.
- Para taming causes more skill loss than taming without the use of paralyzation.
- Resurrection performed by the owner or friend of a pet causes less skill loss than if a stranger were to resurrect.

- Spawn Blocking
- The ability to prevent a particular creature from spawning.
- Necessary game mechanics to prevent an endless number of creatures in the world.

- SS or Screen Shot
- An image that is a copy of exactly what was seen on the screen at the time the copy was made.
- Can be created by hitting the "Prt Scr/Sys Rq" key on your keyboard that appears to the right of F12.
- Highly recommended: UO Screenshot Utility.
- Steed or Fire Steed
- A brilliant flame colored horse that breathes fire.
- The first tameable that requires more than 100.0 taming and the first tameable with 2 pack instincts.
- STR or Strength
- How strong a something is.
- Effects how much one can carry, how many hit points it has, and sometimes how much damage it does.
T
- T2A or The Second Age
- The very first expansion to UO.
- Included the towns of Papua and Delucia and Ice and Fire dungeons, as well as the Terathan Keep.
- When originally introduced, recall and gating was not permitted between T2A and the original Britannia.
- Training (when referred to pets)
- To improve a pet's stats and/or skills in an effort to make them better at fighting.

U
- UO or Ultima Online
- A fantasy online persistent world where people from all over can play and interact with each other.
- UO:3D or Third Dawn
- The third expansion to UO.
- Introduced the Ilshenar land mass, which was only accessible with the new 3D client.
- UOA or UO Assist
- A UOPro 3rd party program similar to UOE/UOF that interacts with the UO client to perform certain actions, such as macros, drink a particular type of potion, or display reg count.
- Can be purchased for roughly $10-$12 from TugSoft, Inc.
- UOAM or UO Auto Map
- A 3rd party utility that is similar to the Radar gump in the UO client, but allows you to see the entire map of the world.
- Uses custom map files that will hold predefined labels, such as building names or daily rare locations.

- UOE/UOF or UO Extreme/Freedom
- An illegal 3rd party program similar to UOA that interacted with the UO client to perform certain actions, such as macros or display reg count.
- Famous for a "buy all regs" ability and being able to remove certain objects (client side only, the object was still physically there), such as walls, ovens, or articles of clothing, in order to see what was under or behind it.
- Now defunct, this utility was available free and allowed custom plugins to be written and added that allow it to perform a wider variety of functions.
- The phrase
You use UOE
was commonly used to infer that someone was a "cheater".
- UOMon or UO Monitor
- A UOPro utility that sat in your computer's systray that displayed the up or down status of a particular shard.
- Now defunct due to a broken polling server.

- UOPro
- A special label given by OSI/Origin to 3rd party utilities to show that they are officially approved to use with the UO client.
- No new 3rd party utilities will receive the UOPro status.

- UO:R or UO:Ren or Ren or UO Renaissance
- The second expansion to UO.
- It doubled the size of the world, creating two facets: Trammel and Felucca (the original land mass).

- WW or White Wyrm
- A dragon like creature that comes in white.
- Dragons that had been exiled to Ice Dungeon, causing them to lose their fire breath.
